Review:

Watching Sophie B. Hawkins at the Halsted Market Days
Festival brought one question to mind. Why is she playing a neighborhood festival? Despite archaic equipment, (Sophie's mic failed her all night,) Hawkins shined. With a Joplinesque,
r&b tinged register, Sophie managed to liven up a safe rock and roll set. Of course, Hawkins had to play it safe. Yes, the guitars and the drums were the only instruments that didn't fail her. Even more disappointing was Hawkins' band. If Sophie's guitarists weren't falling behind, her drummer was usually racing ahead.

In two thousand and one, Hawkins seems more at home on the stage. Indeed, this incarnation of SBH seems more confident
and more jovial. Under the most difficult of circumstances, she managed to exchange barbs with a bunch of oversexed fans. When
her band flubbed a portion of "AILMD," Hawkins kept her
frustration in check and continued on.

No, it wasn't a perfect show. The rock and roll
arraignment muted the emotion of "No Connection"
and "California Here I Come." In all honesty,
I wished that Hawkins had featured a piano and a
guitar on "WIMBJ." After hearing Hawkins' piano-guitar version of that song on Friday, my piano jones can't be
denied.

Still, you have to admire Hawkins' willingness to
reshape her songs. For example, the drum-guitar
incarnation of "Sleeping Beauty" that Hawkins delighted
the crowd with. After watching Sophie's performance,
I am left a strong desire to see her perform again.
Next time, I hope that she's booked at a classier venue.
After tonight, she has definitely proved her worth.

I was also able to see Sophie perform Sunday evening at the Halsted Street Market Days and agree wholeheartedly that she is much too talented to show her gift at such a small venue. Unfortunately, I also thought her band was awful and the acoustics were terribly distorted.

I also saw Sophie at Border's on Saturday afternoon and was amazed at how much time she took to answer any and all questions and how warm and friendly she was. Later that day I saw her and Gigi at Market Days and talked with them for over a half hour. Sophie was gracious enough to allow me to take some pictures of her and Gigi offered to take some pictures of Sophie and myself.

After Sophie's post-concert autograph session, Gigi saw me and invited me behind the gate where I was told that I could take more pictures as well as have more pictures taken of Sophie and me.

Sophie is definitely a class act and I look forward to seeing her in a better suited venue in Chicago.

VIVE LE SOPHIE!!! Chicago "Halsted Street Market Days" was an absolute knock-out of a set... especially from about 40 feet away from center stage! I too managed to record the entire show in digital stereo and am very pleased with the recording.

Sophie claimed that tonight's performance of "MY BEST FRIEND" was the first time she and the band did it "live." Another highlight of the evening was her off-the-cuff ditty "Your Big Butt In My Face" (at least those were the lyrics she came out with), just before blowing everyone away with a lush rendition of "No Connection."

SBH was gracious, sexy and spectacular in every way tonight. You should have been there!

PS : I haven't check the videotape yet, but also managed to get her appearance on the local NBC "Suite Home Chicago" show on Friday.

Yes, Sophie was incredible tonight. I hope that she
makes a return visit to Chicago very soon. She's definitely
come a long way. Man, she deserved a better venue! She
is to good to play a neighborhood festival. I'd definitely shell out twenty bucks to see her at the Vic again.

Sincerely,
Danial

Hi Shera. Nice to hear from you. Yep, it was a very
joyous weekend and a very memorable weekend.
What can you say? Sophie was a very gracious host.
I can't stress that enough. She is gracious and classy
and extremely down to earth. I saw her sign autographs
on two separate occasions and each time, she treated
each fan exceptionally well.

Thank you Sophie. Thank you, thank you.

Sincerely,
An awestruck cracker

Hi Shera. I'm sorry if I slobbered all over Sophie.
It's hard to write a decent concert review when you're a huge fan
of the performer. I'm very surprised that I didn't faint
after Sophie signed my journal on Saturday. Yep, the old
knees were wobbling. Lol. Nice chatting with you Shera.
Peace...

Sincerely,
CUBS WIN!
